Oral history interview with J.H. Lehmann, Jan. 13, 1985.

Lehmann describes his early life and education in Germany. He tells of transferring to Italy midway through medical school after experiencing prejudice in Munich. He describes the circumstances that brought him to the United States, Seattle, and his private practice in Ballard. Lehmann served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return he specialized in cardiology and participated in health projects abroad. He speaks of his wife, Thelma Gerstman, and their two sons. He discusses his support for numerous Seattle Jewish causes but explains that the focus of his activity remains in his home community of Ballard. Lehmann is one of the founding members of the Ballard Hospital. He also discusses his patronage of local arts, his seat on the University of Washington Board of Regents, and the influence of his friend and role model, Albert Shemanski.
